Bachata started to evolve in the fifties and sixties when the Dominican street players took some influence from the Cuban Bolero and Mexican Ranchero into their guitar ballads. Some tempo and instruments (tambor, guiro) were added. The heartbraking lyrics touched the poor people. Bachata was mainly played in the brothels (whore houses) and low class bars. Therefore Bachata was up to the end of eigties the music for the low class people and it was not allowed to be played in the radio or in the high class places. The final breakthrough was 1992, when Juan Luis Guerra won the Grammy with his Bachata Rosa -album. Nowadays Bachata is the heart of Dominican Republic and it is played all over the world, especially much in New York, Italy and Spain. Bachata lyrics contain bitterness, misery, betrayal, abandonment, love, sex - deep tragic feelings. You will hear Bachata everywhere in Dominica Republic. The household work is done in the rhytm of Bachata and where ever you walk, Bachata will follow you.
